as Defined in Dictionary.com*
Definition* – Culture – “The quality in a person or
society that arises from a concern for what is regarded as excellent in the
arts, letters, manners, scholarly pursuits, etc.”
·
Culture –
development or improvement of the mind by education or training.
·
Culture – the
behaviors and beliefs characteristic of a particular social, ethnic or age
group. For example, youth culture, drug
culture
Definition*- Racism – “a belief or doctrine that inherent
differences among the various human racial groups determine cultural or
individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is
superior and has the right to dominate others or that a particular racial group
is inferior to the others.”
Culture crosses racial boundaries and does not
coincide with race. In other words,
whether you are Asian or African American or Native American or Caucasian, you
may have the exact same culture or a completely different culture. Therefore, for many people, culture is what
is important, not race. That would make
you a culturalist, not a racist.
Combining the two definitions of culture and racist.
A culturalist is a belief or doctrine that inherent
differences among the various human culture groups determine individual
achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own culture has different
cultural choices and does not mean one group is inferior to the others. For
example, a person may prefer to hear chamber music while another rock.
There are different types of culture e.g. black
culture, drug culture, Black Lives Matter culture, Me too ultra, beauty culture
while culture all goes beyond race.
Sometimes one has a preconception of a person is of
another culture but suddenly shifts when one gets to know them well enough.
Affirmative action is an example of identifying with
educated white culture and can be a reason for supporting affirmative action.
