The Voice of Couples Therapy: Common Conflicts & Complaints

The Voice of Couples Therapy:
Common Conflicts and Complaints

New Center for Psychoanalytic Studies
Saturday, October 11, 2014
9 AM - Noon
 Joan Jutta Lachkar, Ph.D.

Every couple complains. Sometimes a complaint is a complaint, and sometimes it is used for evacuation. This course draws from many theoretical perspectives including classical psychoanalysis, self-psychology, ego psychology, object relations, attachment theory, and others. The first part of the workshop describes various kinds of complainers and how to “listen” to the complaints as they link to various personality disorders. It also has applicability to multicultural and cross-cultural couples. Time is allowed for role-play, case presentations and discussion.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
• Understand the eight different types of “complainers” and their corresponding personality disorders.
• Explore couples’ mutual projections.
• Discover various listening approaches and their applicability to cross-cultural complains.
